For spring break this year we took the family West. We opted out of the Dodge Caravan from Budget rental car and went with a ’91 VW Westfalia instead. It had manual windows, a crummy stereo and not nearly the amount of cup-holders, but a whole lot more character. I promised my kids they would thank me for the experience later. We started in San Francisco with my sister and then hit the PCH South. With Big Sur in our sights, we were stopped short by a road closure due to all the heavy rains. You know that whole saying in life about “Plan B”… well its true, you better be ready. We spun around and headed North and landed in the Armstrong National Park, just outside of wine country. The destination wasn’t nearly as important as the journey and for that I am forever grateful. I’m still working on convincing the kids….but rest assured, they’ll get it one day.

I carried one camera and one lens.

NIkon FM 2 with a 35mm 1.4. I swear I could take every shot from here on out with that setup.

Here’s another project that we worked on last summer that is now coming into fruition. Seeing a project go to print is always the final reward for me.

We had an incredible journey while shooting this one. For 2 weeks last July we zig zagged the country to shoot with these girls in their home environment. Its always an honor to step into someone’s inner circle of life and get to take pictures of the process. Despite being swarmed with stylists, wardrobe, cameras, and flashes we always seem to find our moments of serenity and the wall comes down. Thats my favorite moment.

Steve’s a good dude. We’ve traveled around the world together over the last few years. He’s the lead Art Director at Nemo for the NIke 6.0 stuff that we shoot. We surf, stay up late, talk about music, art and come up with ideas. And when its “go” time…we work….very seamlessly together.

“Steve…stand there in the light and make one of those faces that you do.” He always obliges, usually with a witty, whimsical or surprised look that I prefer. He usually has a some version of a point and shoot in his hand, pretending to take pictures. Sometimes of me…yet I don’t think I’ve ever seen one. He has claimed some sort of Flickr stream, however.

So, anyway, here he is. Steve’s own personal portfolio, if you will. This is us just finding our way through the moments….scouting, searching, exploring and making memories.

I rarely make posts like this, but I was pretty psyched on how this catalog came out. We shot this last year in February. We had a chance to work with some great athletes and an awesome team that made it all possible. We were even lucky enough to go back this year and do it all again.
